Our First Run of the Day

Depart Te Karetu at 8:00 am → Arrive Onepoto at 8:15 am for drop-off/pick-up → Depart Onepoto 8:30 am → Arrive Whananui at 9:00 am.


Parking your vehicle at Te Karetu?

If your planning to do the walk starting from the Southern end (Onepoto), and finishing in the Northen end (Whananui) - then you will need transport from Te Karetu to Onepoto on your first day, and transport from Whananui back to Te Karetu on your last day. 

If your planning to do the walk starting from the Northen end (Whananui), and finishing in the Southern end (Onepoto) - then you will need transport from Te Karetu to Whananui on your first day, and transport from Onepoto back to Te Karetu on your last day. 


Parking your vehicle at Onepoto?

Parking at Onepoto is generally quite safe - you may have heard of vandalism/theft in the past, however we have not had any reports of such in recent years. The majority of people would leave their vehicles at Onepoto with no issues. 

If your planning to do the walk starting from the Northen end (Whananui), and finishing in the Southern end (Onepoto) you would book this run from Onepoto to Whananui on your first day. If you're wanting later departure times, you will be able to book this under our "Departing Onepoto for Whananui" run.


Please book this route if you're wanting a boat transfer from:

- Te Karetu to Onepoto, departing 8am, arriving 8:15am

- Te Karetu to Whananui, departing 8am, arriving 9:00am

- Onepoto to Whananui: departing 8:30am, arriving 9:00am


Te Karetu

You are looking for the boat ramp located next to the Holiday Park. You will see a small shed and a water taxi sign in front of the boat ramp, and our blue boat and skipper waiting for you. 

Onepoto

Turn right out of the driveway from the Holiday Park/Visitors Centre onto the main road. After a 15min drive you will come to the “Onepoto Road” sign, follow the road for 300 metres and you will see the start of the walk on your right. The carpark area is just next to the shelter, and you will see a road that takes you straight down to the boat ramp. There is a water taxi sign at the beginning of this road, and another down at the boat ramp. The boat ramp is the water taxi pick up/drop off spot.

Whananui 

We can not get our boat into Hopuruahine Landing due to low water levels. The closest point we do is Whananui, which just means you miss out on 1.5 hours/5kms of the walk. Whananui is about a 2.5 hour walk from Waiharuru (the last hut). Just before you arrive to the Whananui site you will come to a water taxi sign along the track, you can't miss it. The Whananui site will be to the left of you, and the waters edge will be to the right. Please wait for your taxi near the waters edge and our skipper will let you know where to board the boat when he arrives.

Leave your vehicle at Onepoto and catch our water taxi to Whananui to start your hike.

Departs Onepoto at 9:30am/1pm/2pm/3pm → Arriving to Whananui at 10am/1:30pm/2:30pm/3:30pm.

Parking at Onepoto is generally quite safe - you may have heard of vandalism/theft in the past, however the there have not been any reports of such in recent years. The majority of people would leave their vehicles at Onepoto with no issues. Call the Te Urewera Visitor Centre on 06 837 3900 if you have any concerns.

If your planning to do the walk starting from the Northen end (Whananui), and finishing in the Southern end (Onepoto) you would book this run from Onepoto to Whananui on your first day. 

Onepoto

Turn right out of the driveway from the Holiday Park/Visitors Centre onto the main road. Where to wait for your water taxi?

Whananui is 6km (around 2.5 hour walk) from Waiharuru (the last hut). Just before you arrive to the Whananui site you will come to a water taxi sign. The Whananui site will be to the left of you, and the waters edge will be to the right. Please wait for your taxi near the waters edge and our skipper will let you know where to board the boat when he arrives.
